History

On 1958, we opened our first Aurrera store, and ever since we have had clear objectives and firm commitments to support Mexican society. With the formation of the Wal-Mart de Mexico Foundation, in 2003, social projects for the community reached new goals and more initiatives have been created, benefiting and improving the quality of life for hundreds of thousands of Mexican families.

As of this year, we focused our social actions on three main axes: promotion of sustainable feeding, support during natural disasters and sustainability initiatives. With our contribution, through 181 non-profit organizations in Mexico, we benefited 1,973,283 people during 2006.

Strategy

The strategy set up by our Foundation provides human, financial and organizational resources to achieve efficient and palpable solutions, which contribute towards improving the quality of life for the communities.

Thus, we follow 5 lines of action to promote sustainable feeding:

  • Fight infant malnutrition: Providing nutritional supplements to children under 5, as well as with nutritional packages for the family and nutrition-oriented education.
  • Food availability: In kind donations and financing of backyard patches and family farms to guarantee food availability
  • Infrastructure: Family hygiene during food preparation is an important element of nutrition. Thus, donations are given for infrastructure, such as: ecology-oriented kitchens, latrines, rainwater catchment systems, refrigerated trailers and a water purifying plant
  • Nutrition-oriented education: The objective is to improve feeding habits and promote physical activity in elementary-school children
  • Productive projects: The “Feeding is also an Art” program was created to strengthen long-term food purchasing capacity, establish roots in the place of origin and create social development through work. With this program, local handicrafts are traded in our stores, and specialized technical assistance is provided. 100% of all income, including profit, is returned to the communities.
