Fight infant malnutrition |
|

In 2006, we joined the effort of organizations that provide comprehensive care to those whose level of malnutrition places growth and the development of cognitive abilities at risk. Programs of this type include the supplying of nutritional packages, education in healthy eating habits and follow up on the nutritional state of these children during the first five years of their lives.
With Your Help, Our Help Grows Program
All units that have voluntarily decided to participate in this campaign sell sticker for customers and members at a price of $5 pesos each. The money collected is channeled to institutions that have projects meant to foster nutrition.
In addition to these resources, the Wal-Mart de Mexico Foundation matches each peso obtained with an equal amount.
- This program was conducted in 7 states nationwide in 2005
- 23 states participated in 2006, thereby supporting a total of 25 institutions, to whom we donated more than $8 million pesos
- 31 states participated in 2007, thereby supporting 33 institutions, to whom we donated more than $10 million pesos
Thanks to the generosity of our customers and members

Food Availability |
|

Through food banks and social institutions, we have been able to feed 152,698 people.
Three hundred and sixty-five days of the year we donate food products from our stores and distribution centers.
In the last years, Wal-Mart de Mexico has been one of the largest donators to food banks throughout Mexico.
We support 1,817 families in rural communities by providing sustainable backyard gardens (patches and farms) and the necessary training to ensure sustainability and develop long-term projects.

Food Infrastructure |
|
Discussing the food topic and achieving a real contribution requires of a strategy that includes several factors:
The improving of living conditions for families in remote areas is one of the top priorities because we seek to reduce contamination of food sources as much as possible. Moreover, we assisted in potable water availability through rainwater catchment systems for more than 1,122 families throughout Oaxaca, Guerrero, Chihuahua and Puebla.

We contributed towards improving the capacity of public eating halls and kitchens.
In addition to nutrition-related activities, we have supported food banks by providing refrigerated trucks, warehouses, dehydrators and refrigerators. In this manner, fresh food supplies have arrived in optimum conditions for the end-consumer. |

The following program was publicly launched to help reduce overweight and obesity indexes in the country:
“Amusement and Nutrition for Healthy Living”, through an agreement with the Public Education Minister, Josefina Vázquez Mota, the Health Minister, José Ángel Córdova Villalobos, Funsalud, the group of experts leaded by Ogali, Project Concern International and the Wal-Mart de Mexico Foundation, to promote said project and improve all the knowledge, attitudes and behaviors to increase the consumption of fruits and vegetables, as well as the practicing of a physical activity.
Currently, the program benefits 13,500 children in five states throughout the country and has shown benefits such as 15% increase in the number of classrooms with drinking water bottles, 6% increase in the number of children buying vegetables in school cafeterias, 21% increase in the number of students practicing sports before starting school, and 15% increase in the number of students with more knowledge about the topic, among many others.
It’s important to highlight the special enthusiasm shown by 725 associates who volunteered their time to perform certain tasks, such as height and weight recording, sports activities, and paint and maintenance works in participating schools.
Thanks to Ogali and Project Concern International for their work to develop this program on behalf of all the children in Mexico.

Production Projects |
|
We fully support sustainability in our communities to strengthen their long-term production capacity in their places of origin. Our vision is to assist in the social development of their communities, which is achieved by having sources of income.
Thus, the creation of the Feeding is Also an Art Program.
Feeding is Also an Art Program
Launched in 2005 so that rural communities have the chance to access our retail infrastructure.
It has been two years since we started working in benefit of Mazahua and Tarahumara communities by providing training and specialized technical assistance to enhance their production processes; their handicrafts were then sold in our units, with 100% of the income generated —including profits— returned to these communities.
Throughout 2007, we sold handicrafts in 7 Sam’s Clubs and 41 Vips, enabling 200 Mazahua women and 670 Tarahumara indigenous to become a permanent part of this program, and benefiting 4,350 people in total.
The communities from Oaxaca and Guerrero joined the program at the beginning of 2008. The first community produces poppy seed byproducts, and the second jamaica flower and Money. 1,745 people benefit from this program.
