Objective:
Supply the units with 100% renewable energy by 2025.
Solar, eolic (wind), mini-hydroelectric energies are considered renewable energy, so is energy produced from biofuels, among others.
Short and medium term goals:
- 2008 - Reduce energy consumption by 4% per square meter (kWh/m2) at units, DCs and home offices.
- 2009 - Reduce energy consumption by 25% per square meter (kWh/m2) in new units
Reduce greenhouse effect gas emissions by 30% per square meter (ton/m2) in new units.
- 2012 - Reduce energy consumption by 20% per square meter (kWh/m2) at units, DCs, and home offices

The role of energy
Energy plays a crucial role in economic growth and improving the quality of life of the population. Rational exploitation of natural resources for energetic reasons, as well as a greater efficiency in all the links forming the supply chains, contributes to mitigate the environmental impact. Furthermore, the use of renewable sources and clean and efficient technologies also help.
The onset of an energetic crisis undoubtedly will create an economic, social and environmental crisis. The efficient and responsible use of energy is essential for sustainability.

Walmart and Energy
Walmart de Mexico environmental strategy started with energy savings in 1999. Initial actions were created and implemented in the energy savings area. Afterwards, savings efforts were reflected with the National Energy Savings award (2003), granted by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), the Trust fund for Energy Savings and the Secretariat of Energy.
At Walmart de Mexico we have a series of programs to reduce energy consumption in illumination, refrigeration and air conditioning systems; which leads to a reduction in the emission of greenhouse effect gases. This reflects our commitment and responsibility with the communities of tomorrow, so they can enjoy a better Mexico.
We are currently undergoing the following actions:
- Change in lighting fixtures
- Redesign of efficient refrigeration systems
- Implementation of LED illumination systems and solid state illumination
- Optimization of height in lighting
- Install automatic controllers in air conditioned, illumination and refrigeration systems
- Use of environmentally-friendly coolants, such as Glycol and CO2
- Use of solar energy for water heating
