Residue network

Objective:
Generate zero wastes by 2025 with the reduction, reuse and recycling of wastes and packages.

Short and medium term goals:

  • 2008 - Increase waste recycling by 25%

Wastes

As a result of different productive activities developed by society, there is an unavoidable generation of a series of solid, liquid or gas wastes that may have negative effects on the environment and health.

However, if wastes are managed adequately, they can become raw material with a commercial value. With actions such as reuse and recycling, they can be reincorporated to the productive cycle without affecting the environment. This action can change the concept of: GARBAGE for BY-PRODUCT

Walmart and wastes

Walmart de Mexico is committed to:

  • Reduce the amount of wastes generated and
  • Maximum use of wastes, through waste management

The main objective would be that garbage —as such— should not exist. Nature teaches us that everything disposed of is reintegrated into the environment.
The challenge is to go to a circular economy, where the wastes of one sector become the raw material of another. Thus, at Walmart de Mexico we are adamant with NO GENERATION of wastes.

Hazardous Wastes

Defined as those that, substantially or potentially, jeopardize human health or the environment when handled inadequately and posses one or more CRETIB features: Corrosive, Reactive, Explosive, Toxic, Flammable and Biological - Infectious.

Actions carried out

At Walmart de Mexico we already started recycling. This chart is an example of everything we recycled during 2006 and the benefits we obtained.

Material

Recycled Tons

Cardboard 130,697
Shrink wrap 3,283
Fat and bone 5,173
Used edile oil 182
Total 139,335

Environmental benefits resulting from recycling efforts are:

Protected trees 2,221,849
Released sanitary fill space (m3) 907,469
Non-used water (m3) 3,463,470
Non-used electricity (kWh) 69,927,872

Paperless

As of 2006, we began a paper consumption reduction campaign (Paper-less). The following was proposed to achieve the following actions:

  • Not printing documents that are not needed
  • Print documents on both sides of the page
  • Recycle paper for note-taking
  • Eliminate unnecessary reports
  • Digitize documents

With these actions, in 2007 we stopped using 2.3 million paper sheets, i.e., we protected 192 trees.

  Packaging

At Walmart de Mexico, we are aware that a good part of the wastes we generate come from the packages of our merchandise for sale. Thus, we have selected materials and designs that allow for sustainability.

What is a sustainable package?

A package that fulfills its function of containing, protecting, transporting and communicating, made of renewable – recyclable materials, and produced in a clean – responsible way, allowing for its efficient biological or industrial recovery.

Goals for 2007:

    1. An important reduction in materials used for packaging will be worked on, always keeping with the integrity and marketing of the product.
    2. Only environment-friendly materials will be used in packaging of products sold at Walmart and SAM'S CLUB.
    3. The use of a “Scorecard” will evaluate if packages are developed following a sustainability culture
    4. Only items packed in a clean and responsible way will be listed

Scorecard for product packaging

Objective

Work with our suppliers so that the packaging of products traded by Walmart are produced and manufactured in a sustainable way.

Walmart designed the Packaging Scorecard, a tool to evaluate packaging sustainability

The parameters measured in the Packaging Scorecard are:

  • 15% GHG/CO2 per ton produced
  • 15% In the use of healthy and safe materials
  • 15% Product / packaging ratio
  • 5% Use of cube
  • 10% Sustainable transport
  • 10% Content of recycled material
  • 10% Value recovery
  • 5% Renewable energy
  • 5% Innovation
